Alumni Spotlights - Class of 1980 - 1989 Submit YOUR Alumni Story Here Daniel A. Merton, BS, RDMS, FAIUM, FSDMS, ‘84 The education I received at SUNY Orange provided an exceptional foundation that prepared me for a wonderful career in medical sonography. With more than 35 years dedicated to sonography research, Daniel Merton (Dan) has played a transformative role in advancing ultrasound technology, clinical practice, and education. After serving as a Sonar Technician in the U.S. Navy, he pursued his education in medical imaging, earning an Associate of Science degree in Biology (with honors) from SUNY Orange in 1984, followed by a Bachelor’s in Diagnostic Imaging /Diagnostic Medical Sonography from Thomas Jefferson University (TJU), in Philadelphia, which at the time was one of just six programs in the country that offered a BS degree in DMS. Daniel was an early adopter of Color Doppler Imaging (CDI),helping to establish it as a fundamental diagnostic tool for vascular conditions, tumor assessments, and neonatal imaging. His research at TJU also contributed to investigating applications of 3D ultrasound, intravascular ultrasound and ultrasound contrast agents. . A dedicated educator, he has shared his expertise through 100+ lectures, over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, more than 20 textbook chapters, and co-authoring the textbook An Atlas of Ultrasound Color Flow Imaging. Daniel’s contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including multiple Kenneth Gottesfeld Awards for outstanding research in ultrasound imaging, the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) Joan P. Baker Pioneer Award, and the Distinguished Sonographer Award from the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). Through projects funded by the NIH and leading medical organizations, Dan has contributed to improved clinical practices in neonatal imaging, tumor detection and characterization, and vascular sonography. Dan has also served in leadership roles for several medical ultrasound organizations including the AIUM and the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Dan and other members of TJU’s ultrasound group provided ultrasound services to the Philadelphia Zoo, where he scanned such animals as lions, sloth bears, aardvarks and gorillas. Currently, Daniel continues to shape the future of diagnostic ultrasound at ECRI- a nonprofit, independent medical device testing and patient safety organization. Here he evaluates cutting-edge medical imaging technology and develops guidance reports on best practices in the use of sonography and other technologies. Dan has recently evaluated a variety of small, battery powered ultrasound scanners, including handheld probes that connect wirelessly to a tablet or smart phone. These relatively inexpensive devices have led to an explosion in the use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and ECRI has published numerous reports to guide purchasing and safe use of this rapidly evolving use of the modality. . Dan’s unwavering commitment to research, education, and innovation has led to improved ultrasound devices as well as expanded applications of ultrasound for enhanced patient care globally. Dan cites his education SUNY Orange in biology, zoology, anatomy and physiology as providing an exceptional foundation that prepared him for his diverse and productive career. Dr. Patricia Russell, DNP, MSN '85 "My SUNY Orange education allowed me the ability to grow and succeed beyond what I thought possible". Patricia Russell’s journey in nursing began at SUNY Orange, where she graduated in 1985. Inspired by her sister, also a SUNY Orange Nursing graduate Gail Russell Byeff (’69), Patricia pursued a career that has taken her across the country. As one of 10 children of a working-class family from Port Jervis, and a first-generation college graduate, the opportunity and affordability offered by the SUNY Orange nursing program was transformational. Her first nursing job was at Mercy Community Hospital in Port Jervis (now Bon Secours). She then worked at a Brown University-affiliated hospital in Rhode Island before moving to San Diego in 1988. There, she spent years in critical care at UCSD Medical Center while earning her Bachelor's in Psychology from UCSD and later a Master’s in Nursing from San Diego State University as an Adult and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, and Clinical Specialist in Critical Care in 1999. After welcoming her son and daughter, Patricia decided to return to Port Jervis in 2007, so that her children would be able to grow up closer to family. The same year, she began her career as a Nursing faculty member at SUNY Orange, as a way to give back, and help mold the next generation of nurses. Patricia officially became Dr. Russell in 2015, after earning her Doctorate of Nursing Practice, and became Department Chair of the SUNY Orange Nursing department the following year. One of her proudest moments, was when she was able to pin her daughter, Marcia Cal at her pinning ceremony, when she graduated from the Nursing department in 2023. Outside of work, Patricia enjoys traveling and outdoor adventures including hiking, kayaking, biking, and snowshoeing—taking full advantage of the Hudson Valley’s natural beauty. . stacey morris '89 Stacey Morris graduated from SUNY Orange in 1989 with an Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts. In recognition of her outstanding athletic achievements, Stacey was named SUNY Orange’s Female Athlete of the Year in both 1988 and 1989. Following her successful tenure at SUNY Orange, Stacey earned a full athletic scholarship to Wagner College, where she continued to excel in basketball and softball. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree at Wagner and left an indelible mark as one of the greatest dual-sport athletes in the college’s history. Her on-court prowess was highlighted by her selection to the 1990-91 NEC All-Tournament team, and she remains celebrated for her contributions to Wagner’s athletic legacy. In recognition of her achievements, Stacey was inducted into the Wagner College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. More than 25 years after her graduation, Stacey and her sister Sherry remain the only two women’s basketball players at SUNY Orange to have scored 1,000 points in their careers—a testament to their skill and determination. Stacey’s passion for sports extended beyond her playing days, as she returned to SUNY Orange to serve as the head softball coach from 1994 to 2010, and in 1999 guided the team to finish third at the national tournament. Over her 17-year coaching career, she amassed more than 300 victories and led the Colts to 12 regional and conference championships. Richard Giordano '86 "The time I spent at SUNY Orange was undoubtedly some of the best years of my life. It was full of study, activities, intramural sports, and the culture of the campus was perfect." When I graduated Minisink Valley High School in June of 1984 I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. Like most teens I was conflicted on whether to go to college or start working full time. I decided to sign up for 12 credits at Orange county community college. I was in for a reality check when I scored poorly on the placement exams .SUNY Orange recommended some remedial course work in Math and English despite my regent’s diploma. This was blessing in disguise. The time I spent at SUNY Orange was undoubtedly some of the best years of my life. It was full of study, activities, intramural sports, and the culture of the campus was perfect. I was able to work part time while pursuing my degree A.A.S Marketing Management. I benefited greatly when I was able to transfer my entire degree over to SUNY New Paltz. While there, I studied business and communication and earned my BA in 1989. Looking back, I realize it’s the transitional part of most people’s lives that are most difficult. From college to career was no different. I struggled to find my purpose and identity and worked many thankless jobs before going back to school to study pre-med, this is when I would play golf at SUNY Orange. In 1996 I decided to start my own business, soon I was the owner/operator of a commercial cleaning and building Maintenance Company. We were proud members of the Chamber of Commerce and Builders Association. This was a great growing experience however; in 2009 I sold the company and needed to reinvent myself. One day while playing golf with friends I was asked if I could help teach golf at a junior golf camp. I accepted and enjoyed it so, that I went on to become a certified golf teaching professional. Within 2 short years 2010, I became a teaching pro at the golf club at Mansion Ridge and then in 2012 was named the Head golf Professional and business manager at the prestigious West Point golf Course. I was living my dream but something was missing. I had a higher calling. In December of 2012 I left golf and declared myself a teacher. I went to work for the New York State Department of Corrections as a Vocational Instructor. I was going to make a difference for the inmate population. For 5 years I worked helping inmates achieve certificate status so they could secure gainful employment. It was a tough and sometimes dangerous job but also very rewarding. In 2017 I had some health issues and needed to work in a less stressful environment. After my recovery, golf was calling to me…and I found it to be a place of healing. In 2018 I was offered and accepted the position of Head Golf Professional and Assistant General Manager for the town of Wallkill Golf Club. I realize now, I never should have left golf. We all think the grass is greener on the other side. Someone once said “If you do what you love….you will never work a day in your life.” This is where I’m at now… I hope you find this too. Robert Shapiro (attended 1979-1981) "Often it takes years and some reflection to understand the value of something. Although I didn't know it at the time, SUNY Orange was the perfect choice for me." Often it takes years and some reflection to understand the value of something. Although I didn't know it at the time, SUNY Orange was the perfect choice for me. With the small classes and extra attention by faculty I was able to do very well. I participated in a club, a sports team and other social activities too. I became passionate about Geology because of a wonderful professor at SUNY Orange and that motivated me to finish with a degree in Earth Science from Penn State. I went on to a Master’s Degree and a successful career. SUNY Orange is where I first learned how to learn, and to be more independent without feeling overwhelmed. SUNY Orange is a great place to get yourself started. Charles Mitchell '87 "As a newly injured young man trying to figure out life, I was accepted, elected, and NEVER rejected by the staff, faculty, administration, and students of the College." Since Graduating Orange County Community College as the first wheelchair using Student Senate President, I went on to SUNY New Paltz and earned my degree in Political Science. I married the woman I met at Orange County Community College and we have three amazing adult children. I worked at City Hall in Middletown as the City Clerk, Orange County Government as a County Commissioner, and now back at City Hall as an Administrator. All this was achieved because of the success and confidence I gained from my time at Orange County Community College. As a newly injured young man trying to figure out life, I was accepted, elected, and NEVER rejected by the staff, faculty, administration, and students of the College. This gave me the courage and self-confidence I needed to go on to have a successful and productive life. Dara Whalen '82 "My work is fulfilling and meaningful and it wouldn't have been possible without the help of all the compassionate and highly qualified educators who helped to make me the nurse I am today. Thank you all." My time at Orange County Community College - SUNY Orange set my path in life in ways I couldn't have dreamed of when I was admitted to the Orange County Community College nursing program in 1980. At the time I was a 20 year old single mother and my dream of finding my life's path came true as I graduated from the nursing program with my AAS in 1982. Since then I've lived and worked all over the United States and continued my education almost without interruption over the last 37 years. In addition to my clinical career I have been an educator for the last 17 years and earned my PhD in 2016. My work is fulfilling and meaningful and it wouldn't have been possible without the help of all the compassionate and highly qualified educators who helped to make me the nurse I am today. Thank you all. Jeffrey Hall '85 "At this point in my life I feel drawn back to where I began my academic journey as a lifelong learner and am looking for ways that I can give back some of what was given to me by doing volunteer work at SUNY Orange." Steve Jobs once said about life that we can only connect the dots looking backwards. That sentiment fits exactly for me at this point in my life. Recently, I was fortunate enough to retire from a rewarding career as an English as a New Language teacher at Liberty CSD in Sullivan County. My career path, however, was not a straight one by any account. After high school I served 4 years in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany for a few years where I first experienced being a second language learner myself. I had studied German for many years and was able to benefit from those skills. Upon leaving military service I was involved in local community theater and eventually met my wife during one of the rehearsals. It was at that time that I began taking classes at Orange County Community College in 1983. With no real plan, I majored in theater and was cast in the role of Judge Wargrave in a production of Ten Little Indians under the direction of John Blue. My wife and I were married in May 1985, the same week that I graduated from Orange County Community College. Following this I transferred to SUNY New Paltz and there completed my BA in Music History and Literature in 1985, less than 2 weeks after my daughter was born. After a decade away from the classroom I rebooted my career by enrolling in graduate school at New Paltz and earned a MS Ed and was certified to teach ESL which was highly in demand and was hired as soon as I applied to Liberty CSD. Now that I am blessed in retirement I am doing volunteer work at two nearby museums and audit upper level math classes as a senior which I enjoy greatly. At this point in my life I feel drawn back to where I began my academic journey as a lifelong learner and am looking for ways that I can give back some of what was given to me by doing volunteer work at SUNY Orange. Scott Ripley ‘88 "Since graduating in the spring of 1988, I have graduated cum laude from SUNY Oswego with a BA in History, earned a MA in History, Education and Administration from East Stroudsburg University and have finally earned my Ed.D. in Education Leadership in 2014 from Walden University." I started at Orange County Community College in 1985. My father, Harold F. Ripley was a Business Professor. Since graduating in the spring of 1988, I have graduated cum laude from SUNY Oswego with a BA in History, earned a MA in History, Education and Administration from East Stroudsburg University and have finally earned my Ed.D. in Education Leadership in 2014 from Walden University. I served as a history teacher, coach, and advisor in Sussex County NJ for 14 years before entering administration. Since leaving the classroom in 2009, I have been an assistant principal, director of curriculum & instruction, and Superintendent of High Point Regional High School District in Wantage, NJ. William Thayer (attended 1983) "Orange County Community College provided a great foundation that I credit for successfully completing my degrees at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry ." After completing the first two years of college at Orange County Community College I transferred to SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry to complete a B.S. degree in environmental engineering. After working for about 10 years as an environmental engineer, primarily for the Department of Defense in West Point, NY (United States Military Academy) and Baltimore, MD (Corps of Engineers), I returned to ESF in 1998 to complete the MS degree I had started over 10 years before. I continued on to get my PhD in Environmental Engineering in 2005 with a focus in spatial statistics. During this time, I also completed the requirements to become a licensed professional engineer in NY. I worked for SRC, Inc. (formerly Syracuse Research Corp) from 1998 until I retired in December 2020. My career at SRC was spent primarily as a statistician and project manager. My work involved in estimating the risk that former mining and ore processing facilities (smelters) pose (or posed) to people and 'critters'. I currently work for myself as a consulting statistician in the areas of human and ecological risk assessment, sampling design and data analysis. I have recently taught courses in geographic information system/spatial data analysis at Onondaga Community College (OCC rather than OCCC!). I really enjoyed my time at Orange County Community College . OCCC provided a great foundation that I credit for successfully completing my degrees at ESF. I particularly enjoyed classes with Professors Tom Alford (my advisor), Larry O'Brien and Konrad Von Appen. (I took Professor Von Appen's architectural design class as an elective.) I have lived in Syracuse, NY since 1998 (originally from Newburgh). I got married in 2006 to my wife Lynn. I did my best as a step-father to help Lynn raise two children. Lynn and I are retired and looking forward to spending more time hiking and biking, and seeing more of the country." Michael Friedman '82 After being a proud member of the graduating class of 1982, I went on to SUNY Brockport and received a B.S. Degree in Communication with an emphasis in Broadcasting. I went on to work in radio for 8 years, along with working serving the public sector. This took me to a career in security which began in 1995. I left New York as a security supervisor in 2017 and relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina, where I am continuing my security career today.

I graduated from Monroe-Woodbury High School in 1959 where I had been a C- student. Thanks to the faculty at Orange County Community College, I found not only myself, but a love of learning. There, I was a straight A student and won the Social Science Student Award at the 1961 graduation. At that time, I was the first student to transfer to an Ivy League school (Columbia). I served 12 years as an administrative assistant to Janet Reno – the former Attorney General of the United States and then became a Circuit Court Judge in Miami where I served for 25 years. I am now retired. In 2017, I received the Florida Bar Criminal Justice Lifetime Achievement Award. I owe those successes to Orange County Community College and the impact it made on my life from 1959-1961. Jay Herres '67 “Orange County Community College’s art faculty was fantastic!" Jay was an art major at Orange County Community College. After graduation he went on to continue his education at the Maryland Institute College of Art and received a BFA in painting. In his own words, “Orange County Community College’s art faculty was fantastic! I have been painting and drawing ever since and have shown in many Tampa Bay Art Galleries. I am currently working on oil paintings and drawing and looking forward to future shows. Arthur Stegen '66 "I am frequently reminded how important those two years as a student at SUNY Orange prepared me with the confidence, skills, and memories for a lifetime." I was an average high school student who loved running and skiing, but had no especially strong sense of my future after graduation. With limited resources, I considered the military until a former high school teammate encouraged me to come to Orange County Community College and join him on the cross-country team. I found success with the team, as well as academic encouragement from my advisor who helped me assess and find my interests in foreign languages and history, to develop the focus and skills that led to becoming the first college graduate in my family. I received an athletic scholarship for running that led to an undergraduate degree and eventually two graduate degrees. In my second year of teaching high school French (1970), I was drafted into the U.S. Army. Following Basic Training, my assignment to the Defense Language Institute as a language instructor was cancelled and I was sent instead to the U.S. Army Modern Winter Biathlon Training Center in Alaska. They had discovered my running and skiing background. Biathlon is the modern Winter Olympic sport that combines cross-country skiing with rifle marksmanship that had originated in Scandinavia. This army assignment was responsible for the exciting international sports competitive experience that included representing the U.S. in four World Championships, including one in the former Soviet Union. Following three years of living in Europe, studying language in France, and sport coaching in Norway, I became the coach for the U.S. Biathlon Team and the 1980 Olympic Biathlon team. I was later recruited back to the military and served a 26-year career as the U.S. Armed Forces Biathlon team coach and administrator and was awarded the army’s highest non-combat award for writing the U.S. Army manuals for training and coaching biathlon. During that career I traveled the world for competitive events, including the United States, Europe, and Asia, and from the Artic north at Inuvik, Canada to Ushuaia on the southern tip of Argentina. I was inducted into the New York Ski Racing Association and the U.S. Biathlon Hall of Fame. I have served on the Board of Directors for the U.S. Biathlon Association since 1984. One of the most important accomplishments for which I am proud was introducing women to the sport in 1980 and seeing the U.S. Women’s Biathlon team win medals at the first Woman’s World Championships in 1984. After retirement from teaching and the military I published my second book about biathlon in August 2019. The first, Biathlon, published in 1979 was about the sport while the second, Unique and Unknown, the Story of Biathlon in the United States is a more complete history. I was awarded the Ullr Prize by the International Ski History Association in March 2020 with the presentation of that award to be made at Sun Valley, Idaho in December 2020. I am frequently reminded how important those two years as a student at SUNY Orange prepared me with the confidence, skills, and memories for a lifetime. I developed life-long friendships with a few classmates and teammates whom I often share the memories we made together during the two years we learned and grew as students. Charles Hughes '66 "The skills I learned in photography classes at Orange County Community College I used as a combat photographer, newspaper photographer, and crime scene photographer. " I attended Orange County Community College starting in January 1963, changed majors after a year, and so was there for three years. I lived in a rooming house right next door to the ornate stone old college building (Morrison Hall) on Grandview Avenue. While I was at Orange County Community College one of my roommates asked if I wanted to learn how to take pictures and develop film. His dad was a weekend photographer and I said yes. My second year I was photo editor at the Citadel and worked on the yearbook and the following year I was co-editor of the Citadel and yearbook. I have many fond memories of those years! I was in the US Army - Vietnam from 1967-68. I began as a reporter in the newspaper business in 1969, worked for the Middletown Times-Herald Record in 1973, went on to be managing editor of The Evening Tribune in Hornell, NY, changed careers in 1983 and went to work for Steuben County Sheriff's Department in NY where I retired as a Division Commander in 2010. The skills I learned in photography classes at Orange County Community College I used as a combat photographer, newspaper photographer, and crime scene photographer. I operated my own photography business on a part-time basis starting in 1974 and did commercial work and weddings through 2003. Having a life-long interest in modified cars, in 1978 I started free-lancing for magazines by photographing hot rods and customized cars and trucks and writing the feature stories on how they were built, and continue to do so today. I have had more than 170 photo-features published in more than 15 different magazine titles. For nine years I served on the Canisteo NY Village Board of Trustees, seven as a trustee, and two years as Mayor. We moved to Burlington, North Carolina 10 years ago to be near our two daughters. Russell Woodman '64 "By far however, my most joyous and fond memories are my wonderful two years at Orange County Community College. Of equal importance is the intellectual and personal growth that I experienced as a student there." My name is Russell Woodman. I graduated from Orange County Community College in the spring of 1964. Upon graduation I attended three more institutions of higher education earning my bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. By far however, my most joyous and fond memories are my wonderful two years at Orange County Community College. Of equal importance is the intellectual and personal growth that I experienced as a student there. Professor Rosenblum was very helpful in expanding my horizons in literature and theater. Dr. Mapes made me enthusiastic about the biological sciences. This enthusiasm would eventually become part of my reason to enter the health services profession. It was Professors Chachis and Diana who guided me towards my entrance to Ithaca College, as a physical therapy student. Professor Shepard coached me in his wonderful speech classes how to address the public. The competence that I developed under his tutorage was critical in help be gain the confidence to teach. In 1970 I started my career as a member of Quinnipiac University physical therapy faculty. I am now professor emeritus and still teach part time. Finally, but not least are the friendships that I made at the college. My roommate was Ron Greisman. We remain, close friends. Another wonderful friend I wish to acknowledge is Lorraine Prichep, her friendship and the warmth of her family added much to the great times I experienced between 1962-1964. - Respectfully submitted Russ Woodman

Alumni Spotlights - Class of 1970 - 1979 Submit YOUR Alumni Story Here Tony Meola ’74 "SUNY Orange turned me around and pointed me in an arts and academic direction that substantially affected the success I would find my adult life to this very day." Tony Meola’s journey from Middletown to Broadway exemplifies resilience, creativity, and excellence. A SUNY Orange alumnus, Tony’s love for sound began with his early fascination with music, nurtured through his dedication to the clarinet, saxophone, and school music ensembles. After navigating personal challenges in high school, Tony discovered a supportive community at SUNY Orange, where he found opportunities to explore his love for the arts through drama and music. A highlight of his time at the college was orchestrating music for the school play, Pinocchio under the guidance of Marie Dulzer. Tony also found himself delving into musical interpretation with Dr. Marvin Feman. During his time at SUNY Orange, Tony began to embrace physical activities like swimming and running. Ultimately, years later Tony completed the New York City Marathon several times as well as completing several international triathlons —a powerful milestone in his journey of self-discovery. Upon graduating from SUNY Orange, Tony transferred to Ithaca College as a music major but quickly changed majors to drama, where he honed his craft and deepened his passion for sound. A transformative internship with the New York Shakespeare Festival set the stage for his career, as he contributed to the groundbreaking musical A Chorus Line. Building on this experience, Tony cultivated connections that propelled him into a remarkable career on Broadway. Over the years, Tony has contributed to more than 50 Broadway productions. His achievements include sound design for iconic productions such as The Lion King (Drama Desk Award winner), The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Drama Desk Award winner), Wicked, The Sound of Music, and Kiss Me, Kate. His expertise extended to international productions in London’s West End and tours worldwide. Beyond sound design, Tony served as associate producer for Come From Away, Lysistrata Jones and First Date. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, Tony received the SUNY Orange Edward A. Diana Alumni Leadership Award in 2016. That same year, he served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards, cementing his influence in the theater industry. Now mostly retired, Tony and his husband, married in 2017, split their time between Connecticut and New York City. Tony attributes his success to perseverance and preparation, living by the motto, “Be ready when opportunity knocks” His journey, rooted at SUNY Orange, continues to inspire as a shining example of passion and dedication in the arts. Dr. Thomas E. Littner, '77 "After high school, I felt like I needed to be home for two more years, because I wasn't quite mature enough and wasn't quite ready to go away... A lot of my high school friends all came here, and we grew up together. By going here, you save money.. a lot of money." Born and raised in Middletown, Dr. Thomas E. Littner's journey began at Middletown High School, where he graduated in 1975. Shortly after, he attended SUNY Orange (then known as Orange County Community College) from 1975 to 1977, majoring in biology and developing a love for math. During his time at SUNY Orange, Dr. Littner was not only a dedicated student but also an accomplished athlete, going undefeated in #6 singles on the tennis team under Coach Bob Lake’s guidance. After graduating with an AAS degree and a 3.0 GPA, Dr. Littner transferred to Hartwick College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1979. He then pursued his passion for dentistry at Georgetown Dental School, completing his dental degree in 1983. Dr. Littner’s career in dentistry spanned 40 years, from 1983 to 2023. He established his dental practice in his childhood home after renovating it, serving the community where he grew up. In addition to his professional accomplishments, he married his wife, Theresa, in 1986 and together they raised three children. Now retired, Dr. Littner continues to give back to his community more than ever, reflecting the same dedication and passion he exhibited throughout his career. His journey, from SUNY Orange to a successful dental practice, is a testament to his commitment to his hometown and to helping others. Corinne Cody '76 " The audit work, and working with the College and the Association staff, has brought me full circle in my SUNY Orange experience. I am grateful for the confidence and business and accounting basics that I received from my early college experience at SUNY Orange." Dan jantzen '79 "It's been quite a journey and I owe it all to Mr. King and Orange County Community College ." I was one of three Goshen High students who went to Orange County Community College in lieu of our senior year in 77/78. I was planning to go into engineering, but a family friend suggested that I take an accounting class. I did….with Mr. King who was an outstanding teacher. The rest was history as they say. I graduated with an A.S. Degree in Physical Science in June of 1979 and transferred to Northeastern in Boston. It actually worked out really well as all my OCCC courses met almost all of my general requirements at Northeastern and allowed me to focus almost entirely on finance and accounting courses in my time at NU. I graduated from NU in May of 1982, started at what was Peat, Marwick and Mitchell (now KPMG) on August 28th and sat for the CPA exam in November of 1982. I started at Dartmouth Health in 1990. Thank you Mr. King for turning me in the direction which created the path I’ve been on for the past 41 years. It’s been quite a journey and I owe it all to Mr. King and Orange County Community College. Deborah Boyle '74 1998 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient "I feel the confidence and conviction that have characterized my career has strong roots to my basic nursing education at Orange County Community College. Forty five years later, I still think of it fondly. Being there was a joy." In 1972, there were few nursing programs that offered credit for having been a licensed practical nurse prior to pursuing a degree to become a registered nurse. Orange County Community College was one of the few. Hence, I left my home in Connecticut and made the drive to Middletown and was never disappointed. From day one, everyone I met welcomed and supported me, especially the nursing faculty and Mr. George Shepard, Dean of Students. With a scholarship in hand, I ultimately graduated with high honors and since then have received my bachelors and master’s degree. I have been extremely fortunate to have enjoyed a nursing career that spans over four decades the majority of which time I practiced as an Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist. My fortune also includes having had opportunities to lecture in 45 states and 17 countries, authoring more than 300 publications and four books, and being the recipient of numerous honors from the Oncology Nursing Society. I am a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and in 1998, was honored to be the first nurse to receive the Alumnae Award from Orange County Community College . Yale University, my graduate school, also bestowed on me their Distinguished Alumnae award. Over the past two years, I have spent time with the program ‘Health Volunteers Overseas’ teaching oncology, palliative and hospice nursing in Bhutan, Vietnam and Honduras. Additionally, I have traveled to remote western Kenya helping to establish the first in-patient hospice in that country. My book for family members entitled, "The Caregivers Companion" will be in print in 2020. I feel the confidence and conviction that have characterized my career has strong roots to my basic nursing education at Orange County Community College . Forty five years later, I still think of it fondly. Being there was a joy. Joseph Como '75 "Of my school experiences, SUNY Orange ranks at the top. My SUNY Orange teachers were passionate about teaching and it showed. And they personally cared about the students, and that showed too." I think I was truly blessed with an outstanding educational experience at SUNY Orange. Even at the time I graduated in 1975 I didn’t realize how special it was. Those 2 years gave me the foundational tools I needed to transfer to Cornell University to complete my bachelor’s degree, and then to attend the highest ranked environmental engineering graduate program, at Stanford University. My subsequent professional career path included managing several multi-million dollar environmental restoration projects around the nation and creating engineering solutions for Silicon Valley companies. Some years later, and with a J.D. in environmental law, I was able to work on energy law and policy in California, and to work for California's Governor Schwarzenegger and Governor Brown, heading the largest utility customer advocacy organization in the U.S. I owe so much to the outstanding educators I had at SUNY Orange. Of my school experiences, SUNY Orange ranks at the top. My SUNY Orange teachers were passionate about teaching and it showed. And they personally cared about the students, and that showed too. Dr. Francis McCabe '79 "SUNY Orange provided me with the baseline skills for a passion for lifelong learning, as well as friendships that encouraged me to continue to learn and grow." SUNY Orange provided me with the baseline skills for a passion for lifelong learning, as well as friendships that encouraged me to continue to learn and grow. I was the only child/member of my family to attend college and my life has been so much better because of education. I was accepted after graduation to SUNY Buffalo for Business, Northeastern University and MCPHS University (Massachusetts College of Pharmacy then) for Pharmacy. I received acceptance at all three and chose MCPHS University Boston for Pharmacy. I've had a great career in Community Practice, Industrial Practice (Sales and Sales Management) and most of my career in Hospital Practice. I am now the Pharmacist in Charge for St Joseph's Wayne Medical Center in Wayne, NJ championing in excess of $6 million in pharmacy upgrades for St. Joseph's Health (St. Joseph's University Medical Center in Paterson, NJ and St. Joseph's Wayne Medical Center, Wayne NJ). Blessed with two wonderful children, one a graduate of UMass-Dartmouth and the other a graduate of Purdue University. The passion for learning extends to generations! Oh, by the way what a bargain tuition was back then....my, how times have changed since then! My husband and I have lived in sunny Apex, NC for 22 years. We met at Orange County Community College and were married in December of 1970 at the Warwick Methodist Church. Dr. Emmanuel Rosenblum, Dr. Emil Domac and everyone's favorite in the student union, Molly Kaplan, were all part of our witnesses at our wedding. We will celebrate our golden wedding anniversary this December! I went on to New Paltz while my husband Marty entered the work force. He eventually fulfilled his dream of becoming a New York State Trooper and retired after 26 years on the job. I became a secondary school teacher of Social Studies and English, earning my MSEd at New Paltz and then going on 10 years later to earn a CAS/SDA, serving as a school administrator. I spent time as a school business administrator, a high school assistant principal, and as a curriculum specialist in secondary social studies. We loved Orange County Community College and speak often about our time there. We met in Emil Domac's class on History of Western Europe. We felt that our time there gave us a great background. We have 2 sons, 3 grandsons and 1 granddaughter, all in other states. Thanks to Orange County Community College for the great education that led to happy and productive lives! Melinda Catherine (Moore) '70 & Martin Paul Stephani '70 "Thanks to Orange County Community College for the great education that led to happy and productive lives!" Peter A. Poccia, RN '74 "My life in nursing has been so tremendously rewarding and my education at Orange County Community College has made it all possible." In 1969, I returned home from Viet-Nam. I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman attached to the Marine Corps. I never saw the Navy or a ship; I was intensively trained in medical/nursing care and then trained to be a Marine. During the Tet offensive of 1968, I was the operating room supervisor of 1st Hospital Company, 1st Marine Division, a MUST (aka MASH) hospital. Horror beyond your imagination; most folks have no point of reference. I was discharged in largely one piece in 1970 and attended OCCC from 1972 until I graduated in 1974 with an AAS in Nursing. My nursing career gave my life focus and direction and has served me well; I sincerely hope I've served my patients well. Upon graduation, I moved to Greenwich Village, NYC and practiced as an RN in ORs, cardiac perfusion, intensive care private duty and, for most of my career, in NYC ERs. I retired in 2009 from ER staff, Lenox Hill Hospital, NYC and moved to Saugerties, NY, where my dear wife and I founded NYS’s first Cohousing community. We live there, happily, with 18 other families (www.cantinesislandcohousing.org ). In 2011, Hurricane Irene destroyed large sections of upstate NY. The Red Cross was recruiting in nearby Kingston and, after the presentation, the presenter, after noting that I signed in with RN after my name, walked right up to me and the conversation went as follows: (You're a nurse?) Yes. An RN. I was a corpsman in Viet-Nam, completed college and nursed in ORs and ERs in NYC for many years. (And you have time to volunteer?) I'm retired; I have lots of time. (Are you married?) Eh....well.... yes. (You had better call your wife and tell her you won't be home for 2 weeks. I can speak to her and corroborate). My wife, my partner, Susan, was a pediatric visiting nurse (RN) in the poorer sections of NYC for many years. Her response was, "Now take care of yourself and be careful; remember you're not a spring chicken anymore." I didn't get home for 3 weeks. Since that time, the Red Cross has been inviting me to disasters all over the US and Puerto Rico. No, I'm not a workaholic; I try to live a balanced life. My life in nursing has been so tremendously rewarding and my education at OCCC has made it all possible. Jeffrey Dosik '78 "You are never too old to learn with the dedicated faculty of SUNY Orange and their concern for all students past and present." Since finishing my education in the early 1980s, I have been working as a Park Ranger and Librarian for the National Park Service, United States Department of the Interior at the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island. My education at SUNY Orange between 1978 and 1978 under its dedicated faculty prepared me for my career in the field of history. My tie to SUNY Orange has been further strengthened over the years by the wonderful foreign trips organized by the Global Studies Department under Professors, Emil Domac, Demos Kontos, and Paul Basinski. You are never too old to learn with the dedicated faculty of SUNY Orange and their concern for all students past and present. Richard Obetz '71 "I am grateful to the institution and the professors at SUNY Orange for the life-changing opportunities provided to me." I graduated from high school in 1964 and settled into life in Port Jervis. College was not on my radar. I got married later in 1964 and started a family. The Erie Railroad provided me the best job opportunity, but the future was dulled by the decline in the railroad. Being mechanically inclined, I made a reasonable living working as an auto mechanic. However, my wife supported my rather optimistic vision that I could do better. So, I began taking evening courses at Orange County Community College, including summer semester courses. With the encouragement of two professors, I decided after accumulating about 30 credit hours, that I would enroll as a full-time student and complete my associate’s degree in one final year. This move coincided with my daughter beginning kindergarten. Interestingly, and to the surprise of many at the College who did not know me, since I left for work immediately after class and dealt with the responsibilities of a young family, I managed to graduate first in the class of 1971. My achievements at Orange County Community College, together with a little guidance, provided by the head of the business department (a retired NYU professor), landed me a nearly cost-free two years at NYU where I completed a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance and began a professional career with Price Waterhouse, first as an intern and then, upon graduation, as a full-time member of the professional staff. Following ten years with Price Waterhouse, I joined the IBM Corporation where I had a long and successful career, retiring as the Corporation’s Assistant Treasurer to sunny La Jolla, California. I am grateful to the institution and the professors at SUNY Orange for the life-changing opportunity provided me. Robert Irving Miller '77 "I am grateful for the early college experience that I received at SUNY Orange. The education I received has served me well as the foundation of my varied career in the fields of health care, business and law." I attended Orange County Community College while working as a hospital orderly and ambulance driver. After graduating with an AAS in Nursing, I worked as a staff nurse, and then became head nurse overseeing a busy emergency room. I went on to work in critical care. My next position was as a ship’s nurse and purser, serving as the sole medical resource aboard freighters traveling between U.S. ports and Europe. I then worked in hospitals as an assistant administrator and chief operating officer. I resumed my education, attending SUNY College of Technology (now SUNY Polytech) in Utica, NY, where I earned a Bachelor of Professional Studies in Health Services Management, graduating magna cum laude. I went on to earn a M.S. in Management Science from SUNY Binghamton, while working in hospital administration. My career took yet another turn when I applied to law school. While working as a nurse manager and critical care staff nurse in a hospital, I attended Pace University School of Law in White Plains, NY where I was Editor-In-Chief of the Pace Law Review (during my final year). After earning my law degree, I practiced law, eventually opening my own firm with a partner in 2000. I am now the president and managing attorney of that same firm, Sholes & Miller, PLLC, now in its 21st year. The firm currently consists of seven attorneys offering a variety of legal services. My practice concentrates on medical malpractice defense, health law litigation, professional discipline, personal injury, guardianships and mental health. While practicing law and managing the firm, I continue to maintain my license as a registered nurse. I have also taught graduate and undergraduate courses in the fields of law, health care and business administration at several local colleges. I am grateful for the early college experience that I received at SUNY Orange. The education I received has served me well as the foundation of my varied career in the fields of health care, business and law.

Alumni Spotlights - Class of 2010 - 2019 Submit YOUR Alumni Story Here Erika Marrero '19 “I’m forever grateful for the foundation SUNY Orange gave me. It pushed me, shaped me, and opened doors to serve others in ways I never thought possible.” For Erika Marrero, nursing was more than a career change—it was a calling. After working in finance for NYP-Queens and spending 12 years at home raising her four children, Erika felt drawn to a profession where she could make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. That calling led her to SUNY Orange, where she began her nursing journey in 2017—coincidentally, the same year her daughter also enrolled to study criminal justice and play softball. Returning to school with a family of six was no small feat. Erika balanced nursing school while caring for her children, working at a daycare, a wedding hall, and a local restaurant, and co-coordinating the CYO basketball program at her parish with her husband—whom she credits, along with their children, as being a vital source of support and encouragement. “Pursuing nursing with four children was a challenge and one of the hardest things I have attempted,” she reflects, “but it was worth it in the end.” Since graduating from SUNY Orange in 2019, Erika has built a dynamic and inspiring career. She began working at Garnet Health Catskill as both a Medical-Surgical and Critical Care Nurse, and currently serves as a Progressive Care Cardiac Nurse. In August, she will take on a new role as a Cardiovascular Analyst at Garnet Health—an exciting next step in her professional growth. Erika is deeply committed to lifelong learning. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Nursing Informatics. Her passion for education also led her back to SUNY Orange as an adjunct instructor in winter 2024, where she taught ICU clinicals to Nursing 4 students. “It was a very fulfilling experience,” she shares, “and I hope to continue staying involved in the SUNY Orange nursing program.” At Garnet Health, Erika also shines as a leader. She was honored as Preceptor of the Month in May 2024 for her mentorship of new nurses, and currently serves as Chair of the Safety Committee, a branch of Shared Governance. Through this role, she has worked to enhance staff safety and foster an environment where all team members feel safe, supported, and respected. A recipient of the SUNY Orange Leadership Award in 2020, Erika exemplifies what it means to lead by example—with humility, purpose, and a strong sense of service. Her dedication to her patients, students, and colleagues is matched only by the pride she takes in her growing family. Her daughter, a former SUNY Orange student, has since earned a Master’s in Sports Management and is in her final year of law school. Her son Nikolas will be starting at SUNY Orange this fall, playing baseball and studying education, while her two younger sons are continuing their own educational journeys. Lisa Zylberberg '10 "Passion, Perseverance, and Prayers have helped me achieve my dreams. The support that I have received at SUNY Orange has empowered myself, my children, and my students " SUNY Orange alumna and proud nursing professional, Lisa Zylberberg, has experienced an incredible full-circle journey. As a graduate, assistant professor, and Multisensory Lab Coordinator, Lisa's story is a testament to the transformative power of education and perseverance. Lisa’s journey at SUNY Orange began with the challenge of balancing work, raising a family, and pursuing her prerequisites and the rigorous Nursing Program. Her determination, combined with scholarships and the honor of being the keynote speaker at the Fall 2009 Convocation Annual Scholarship Night, fueled her passion for nursing. The support and encouragement she received from faculty members, including Patricia (Cal) Russell, further inspired her to advance her education and career. Today, Lisa is proud not only to be an alumna but also a dedicated Nursing Professor at SUNY Orange. Watching her children follow in her footsteps as graduates of SUNY Orange, she shares in the pride of their achievements—both of her children graduated at 18 years old, in 2020 and 2021, and participated in the 73rd Commencement Ceremony in 2023. In a special recognition of the Zylberberg family’s accomplishments, Dr. Young gave them a “Shout Out” in 2019, highlighting their deep connection and contributions to the college. Lisa’s journey from student to professor embodies the spirit of SUNY Orange, where hard work, family, and community come together to shape meaningful careers and lifelong connections. Danielle Schott '18 "The teachers truly cared about teaching us, and that meant a lot.” Meet Danielle Schott, a 2018 graduate of SUNY Orange’s Nursing program and now an adjunct professor at the very institution that shaped her career. Danielle began her nursing journey at SUNY Orange in 2016, navigating a challenging program full of both tears and laughter. Along the way, she built lifelong friendships and developed the essential skills and knowledge that continue to guide her today. “The teachers truly cared about teaching us, and that meant a lot,” Danielle reflects on her experience. After graduating in 2018, Danielle earned her Master’s in Nursing Education and now shares her passion for nursing as a clinical instructor at SUNY Orange. Teaching future nurses has been a rewarding experience for her, as she continues to impact her students just as they’ve impacted her. A proud alumna, Danielle wholeheartedly supports the program that shaped her and is now proud to be part of the team helping to mold the next generation of nurses. Abigail Doyle '15 "I was reluctant to go to SUNY Orange because I felt there was a negative stigma around community colleges and I ultimately wanted to go away to school. Looking back, attending SUNY Orange was the best decision I could have made when it came to choosing a college" I attended SUNY Orange right after graduating from Valley Central in 2012. I was reluctant to go to SUNY Orange because I felt there was a negative stigma around community colleges and I ultimately wanted to go away to school. Looking back, attending SUNY Orange was the best decision I could have made when it came to choosing a college. I decided to major in liberal arts because I was unsure of what I wanted to choose as a career in or what I was passionate about. The choice to major in liberal arts let me have the freedom to explore a variety of different classes from History of Rock Music, to Criminal Justice 101, to Public Speaking. I was able to dip my toes into many different avenues to discover what I was passionate about. Being enrolled at SUNY Orange made school convenient. It was a 25 minute drive from my house, and I was able to select a schedule that would allow me to work and still participate in extracurricular activities. I was able to graduate without student loan debt. After graduation, I received a job at Walden Savings Bank. The classes I took at SUNY Orange have been invaluable and have taught me skills to feel confident when speaking in front of colleagues, customers, and directors. My job at Walden Savings Bank has even allowed me to stay connected to the College and the Foundation. I am grateful for the people and the things I have learned and the opportunities SUNY Orange is still giving me today. Teresa Hocker '19 "It was an easy choice for me to pick SUNY Orange knowing the fine reputation of this school, and the many programs and course schedules that were offered...SUNY Orange has given me the confidence and a strong foundation to move forward with my educational goals!" When I was younger I always knew that I wanted to attend college “someday,” but I started a family and tabled the idea for a later time. Although I had never attended college, I instilled in my children a drive for higher education and am incredibly proud of their accomplishments. Two of my children are graduates of SUNY Orange, and my oldest son is a graduate of SUNY Albany. Having spent many years hearing me talk of going to college “someday,” my daughter was especially instrumental in giving me the final push to attend. It was an easy choice for me to pick SUNY Orange knowing the fine reputation of this school, and the many programs and course schedules that were offered. I liked the flexibility of evening scheduling and being able to take online courses as well. And now I have been accepted and am attending SUNY Empire in the fall to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Community and Human Services. SUNY Orange has given me the confidence and a strong foundation to move forward with my educational goals! My name is Brittney Valera and I am the owner of an online sun glass store called Highly Shaded and an online t-shirt store called You Think So Too! I graduated as a psychology major, but I am in love with being creative and helping other creatives execute their vision. I started my sun glass business in June 2019 and I'm very excited to see how far this brand will go. I plan to bring more items to the store and add men/unisex glasses. The vision of this brand is to have a pair of sun glasses to fit everyone's personality. Sun glasses are a one size fits all, which makes it inclusive to everyone - all shapes and sizes to pick from which is something I really wanted. This way, no one feels left out. Brittney Valera '16 "I graduated as a psychology major, but I am in love with being creative and helping other creatives execute their vision." I attended SUNY Orange after graduating from Valley Central High School. Unsure of what I wanted my major to be I knew I wanted to pursue something related to business. After my first semester I narrowed my concentration down to Accounting. My time at SUNY Orange allowed me to grow into the young professional that I am today. Upon graduating I transferred to Pace University where I received my Bachelors in Business Administration - Concentration in Accounting. Today I’m employed at Walden Savings Bank as an Accountant and also very involved in the community. Thank you SUNY Orange for setting me up for success! Danielle Wright '11 "My time at SUNY Orange allowed me to grow into the young professional that I am today." Right out of high school, I decided to attend SUNY Orange and earn my Associate's Degree in criminal justice. I was unsure of what I wanted to do or become. There were a few special faculty and professors who became my mentors and influenced where I am today in my life. I was very active in the Board of Activities and also in the Student Senate. I served as Student Senate President for about a year and a half. I also served as a Student Ambassador and gave informational tours, participated in open houses, and volunteered for events for prospective students and their families. Since graduating from SUNY Orange, I made it my life's mission to go to law school, graduate, and become a lawyer. After SUNY Orange, I transferred to CUNY - John Jay College of Criminal Justice to obtain a Bachelor's of Arts in political science and a minor in Spanish. I spent the remaining two years there. My successes at SUNY Orange translated into more successes at John Jay. There, I became a campus leader for the Pre-Law Institute. Upon graduation from John Jay in 2016, I was accepted into law school. I attended Western Michigan University - Thomas M. Cooley Law School for my Juris Doctor degree which was completed in 2018, I started my own consulting firm, D&D Lawgical Solutions LLC. As a Newburgh native, I did not expect to be where I am today. I am extremely grateful for everything that SUNY Orange has offered. Danny Torres '14 "As a Newburgh native, I did not expect to be where I am today. I am extremely grateful for everything that SUNY Orange has offered." Steven DeBuck '11 "My experience at SUNY Orange was filled with extracurricular activities and courses that led to graduation and beyond." My experience at SUNY Orange was filled with extracurricular activities and courses that led to graduation and beyond. I was very active with the Board of Activities from day one on campus to graduation day. I attended weekly meetings, plus ran and assisted events on campus. I also served one semester as the Community Service Committee Chair, a branch off of the Board of Activities. During this time, with my committee, we committed ourselves to a "pet supply" drive for the Middletown Humane Society. The entire college campus, community, and families were involved and the drive was very successful. I also served as a Student Ambassador on campus and provided tours for prospective students and their families plus helped with the college's Open House and various other events. I was also actively involved with SUNY Orange's Business Club. That is how I spent my time at SUNY Orange and graduated in May 2011. I am now full time at the assisting living facility, Promenade at Middletown as an Activities Assistant for over five years now. Promenade at Middletown is surprisingly just down the road from the college. Also, working seasonally at DeBuck's Sod Farm and Scenic Farms Golf Course. Marissa Tahboub '17 "I really enjoyed SUNY Orange because the campus community and professors helped me feel included and heard." I graduated from SUNY Orange in 2017 and received my Associate Degree in Liberal Arts: Social Sciences and Humanities. I really enjoyed SUNY Orange because the campus community and professors helped me feel included and heard. I was able to feel what college life was like, while obtaining all of my general education credits that I transferred to SUNY Plattsburgh. I now attend Plattsburgh and truly think SUNY Orange has helped structure my perspective and outlook on education and helped me in reaching my goal to become a teacher. Elizabeth (Girolamo) Motta '15 "My ultimate goal with Tee-Owels is to help improve modern hair drying and shape the future of ‘protective hair care,’ while guiding women towards a happier hair experience." I graduated from SUNY Orange in 2015 with honors, and finished up my BS in Organizational Communication at SUNY New Paltz. In my senior year, I started laying down the foundation for my brand/company called Tee-Owels, which is an online focused t-shirt hair towel company based out of Middletown, NY. My hair towel is made of soft, organic cotton t-shirt material, which is more favorable than traditional rough and heavy bath towels used in hair drying. Tee-Owels are the best choice for all hair types, but are especially designed to benefit curly and dry hair types. Over the past two and a half years Tee-Owels has been featured in both national and local magazines, such as Glamour Magazine, Orange Magazine, WAG Magazine, Curl Magazine and Curly Hair Mag London. My ultimate goal with Tee-Owels is to help improve modern hair drying and shape the future of ‘protective hair care,’ while guiding women towards a happier hair experience. My own SUNY Orange story began in Fall 2016, two months after I had just graduated from Middletown High School in the top thirty of the senior class with fourteen combined college credits from CTE and Syracuse University "Project Advance" for College Statistics. Being an alumni on the autism spectrum, Asperger's syndrome to be exact, my two years at SUNY Orange were challenging, but enriching, as I went for a degree in visual communications. The first semester was rough because that was when I learned that when it comes to success, there also comes failure. After failing Freshman English 1, I felt like giving up, but I knew I had to try again and learn from my mistakes. Spring 2017, I was back on track academically, I passed all my classes and by the Fall 2017 semester, I was back to my creative and academically successful self. I made the Dean's list and into TRiO. Creatively, I learned to improve on my drawing skills in character designs by finding the balance between realism and my personal style. I learned to take great photographs with my android smartphone and build a website on Wix with a collection of all the projects I did during the spring semester. I learned to manage my time and ask for help. All the struggles and successes were well worth it in the end when I graduated with honors (cum laude). Currently, I am living in Middletown doing my art and digital photography using what I have learned at SUNY Orange. I write, sing, and make videos on the side while I look into my options as to where my path will lead me next. I came a long way during my time at SUNY Orange. The biggest thing I learned was summed up in a quote from Professor Slater-Tanner, "remember – breathe," and "work smart, not hard." It is not about repeating the easy successes of high school. I learned that I am going to have some bumps and failures through the path of success. As a free-lance multimedia digital artist, smart work and hard work are the way to go, creatively and academically. Emily Moriaty '18 "I learned to manage my time and ask for help. All the struggles and successes were well worth it in the end when I graduated with honors." After graduating SUNY Orange in 2014, I attended the University at Albany, SUNY where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and later a Master of Science in mental health counseling. I now work as an out-patient therapist in public mental health in the capital region. SUNY Orange was where I first had an instructor believe in me. I am especially grateful for Dr. Douglas Sanders and Dr. Kathleen Malia for their instruction and guidance. My time at SUNY Orange was critical, more than I knew at the time, and honestly without the support of the faculty I would not have pushed myself to see what my potential was. I’m very grateful for my years at SUNY Orange and the community there that fostered so much growth in me at a very uncertain time in my life. Emily (O'Brien) Koklas '14 "My time at SUNY Orange was critical, more than I knew at the time, and honestly without the support of the faculty I would not have pushed myself to see what my potential was." In 2015, I graduated from SUNY Orange with a degree in Exercise Science. Afterward, I moved to New York City and got a day job as I continued my education and working as a model on the side. I eventually became certified as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach but was uncertain about the exact direction I wanted to go, so I decided to continue working as I figured things out. Fast forward to today, and I‘m so honored to say that out of thousands of other models, I’ve made Sports Illustrated Swimsearch 2019’s Top 17. For the next few months (and hopefully longer), I represent their incredible brand! Currently, we’ve partnered with Kate Upton and her wellness brand called Strong4Me Fitness and I’m so excited to use my past experience and education in a way I never imagined I would. I get to combine all of my passions to inspire people in a very unique way. Cheers to following your own unique path and trusting the process. And a big thank you to SUNY Orange and especially Sheila Stepp, the department chair of my program who pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me realize how much I was capable of in life. Florinda Estrada '15 "And a big thank you to SUNY Orange and especially Sheila Stepp, the department chair of my program who pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me realize how much I was capable of in life." Originally attending Ithaca College, Hailey transferred to SUNY Orange for the 2014-2015 school year. A native of the area, born in Middletown and raised in Montgomery, SUNY Orange was the obvious choice in continuing her education. With a passion for exercise science and a love for basketball, she joined the women’s basketball program while excelling in the classroom. This was in huge part thanks to the caring staff and faculty. After graduating with an AS in exercise science, she continued to pursue further education at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania; graduating with a BS in athletic training in 2017. From that point, she continued working in Pennsylvania but longed for a return back home. After a couple of years working for a private high school in Easton, PA, she received and accepted an offer for an athletic training position at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY. Officially back home, she has been working along-side collegiate athletes, Mount Saint Mary College colleagues and teaching a course covering exercise science. She takes with her all the support and knowledge SUNY Orange has given her. Without SUNY Orange, she feels she wouldn’t have gotten to where she is today. Hailey Anthony '15 "Without SUNY Orange, I feel I wouldn’t have gotten to where I am today." In 2016, I was part of the first New Media graduating class. After graduating from SUNY Orange, I continued my education, receiving my bachelor's degree from Marist College. Life after Marist has taken me in a different direction than I thought, as I ended up working part-time for Angry Orchard in my hometown of Walden, NY. I quickly began to fall in love with the world of hard cider, particularly the tour aspect of the business. Now, I have been with Angry Orchard for over two years and have worked my way to a full-time position as Tour Center Coordinator. I continue to stay active with video production, working on freelance video projects with the Village of Montgomery and most recently with the SUNY Orange Foundation. I feel that my education at SUNY Orange has been beneficial not only for the video production skills it has provided, but also in communication. courses such as The Speaking Voice and radio Shows for Colt Rock Radio. These courses have provided me with practice in public speaking and the necessary skills to address large groups as I do in my career. I am proud of my SUNY Orange education and look to continue my relationship as an alumnus for years to come. Matthew Wynkoop '16 "I am proud of my SUNY Orange education and look to continue my relationship as an alumnus for years to come." I graduated SUNY Orange in 2015 after my dad passed away in February of that year. We were in a bind so I helped my family out by taking 3 years off of school. In 2018 I applied for The College of Staten Island where I live now. I have been a student leader, DJ at my campus’s radio station, WSIA, and involved in The LGBTQ community on campus. I am graduating in May of 2021, at the age of 27, with a Bachelor’s in Communications with a concentration in Media studies and a minor in Sociology/Anthropology. I am looking to get a job in radio someday soon!
