Who is Sugar?

Meet Sugar, SUNY Orange’s very own mastodon.

A 20-foot-long, 9-foot-tall ancient giant who has greeted students at the Middletown campus since the 1980s. Discovered in 1972 near the Warwick-Chester border and radiocarbon dated to around 7910 B.C., Sugar is more than just bones, he’s a bridge to the past and an inspiration for the future.

Sugar, officially known as a Mastodon Americanus,

even features a rare lower jaw tusk, making him a particularly unique member of his ancient species.

Why Your Support Matters

After decades of being proudly displayed in the Bio-Tech building, Sugar needs some TLC. Time has taken its toll, and now it's your turn to take care of him.

We are raising funds to:

Clean & preserve Sugar's skeleton

Safely relocate him to his new home in the Rowley Center's STEM wing

Create an educational exhibit to inspire future generations

This isn't just about moving bones. It's about preserving history, supporting science education, and giving students and visitors a powerful connection to our region's deep past.
